Direct thermal or thermal transfer?
Direct thermal printers print with heat on thermal labels, with no ribbon. They are cheap to run and perfect for courier labels, price tags and anything used within a few months. Most of our desktop and portable label printers are direct thermal.
Thermal transfer printers melt ink from a ribbon onto the label, so the print resists heat, sunlight, rubbing and moisture for years. Industrial barcode printers from Zebra, TSC, SATO and Argox print both ways.
