Direct thermal or thermal transfer?
The ZT510 can work both ways. In thermal transfer mode it prints through a ribbon: wax ribbons suit paper labels, while wax-resin or resin ribbons on synthetic labels give prints that resist heat, moisture, rubbing and chemicals, so the label stays readable for months or years. In direct thermal mode no ribbon is needed and the printer marks heat-sensitive labels directly, which keeps running costs low for shipping and picking labels that only need to last a few weeks.

For thermal transfer printing use 110 mm wax, 110 mm wax-resin or narrower ribbons (42–85 mm) for small labels, wound ink side out.
