Direct thermal or thermal transfer?
The ZT610 does both. Direct thermal needs no ribbon and is fine for short-life labels such as courier or picking labels. Thermal transfer uses a ribbon and gives labels that resist heat, rubbing, chemicals and sunlight, so it is the better choice for carton labels, product labels, synthetic labels and anything that must stay readable for months or years.

Ribbons and labels for the Zebra ZT610
For thermal transfer printing use 110 mm wax, 110 mm wax-resin or narrower ribbons (42–85 mm) for small labels, wound ink side out.
